2014 - U14 Boys - Grimsby "Brunswick Cement" Flames - Rochester Gates Tournament Champs!
The U14 boys Grimsby "Brunswick Cement" Flames had a slow start to the
tournament with a 1-0 victory over the Scottsville Wildcats. The Team
then hit its gear dominating the Penfield Rangers 5-0. On Sunday
morning, in a very physical battle versus the Amherst Arsenal, once
again the boys won the match by a score of 5-0 in a very dominating
performance. It would be an all Canadian final vs. Mount Hamilton. The
boys came out hard and frustrated Mount Hamilton by scoring early to
take the wind out of their sails. While the boys were tired, they
eventually broke through and scored again and never looked back. What a
wonderful weekend as this was the 1st time these boys went away to a
tournament together. All together 13 goals for and 0 against. An
excellent team showing. Well done boys!!!

The 2014 Dazzling Dozen Soccer Tournament, hosted by
the Grimsby Youth Soccer Club was held on the week-end of May 26-27. The
tournament showcased a number of teams from across the Southern Region
of the Province.
12 teams were in the U14 division and the Grimsby Vipers, sponsored by
Manocore Construction dominated the tournament winning every game and
bringing home the trophy. “For the last few years we have been training
year round focusing on both the game and strength training; training is
paying off” states Head Coach James Palin. “We are so pleased with the
performance that our girls have displayed during the tournament” added
assistant coach Jason Johnstone. “They have been working so hard, and
they definitely deserved to win” he added.
“It’s a great privilege to watch the girls grow, mature and bond as a
team. We try to stay focused during training, conducting drills and
building on our skills, but our main focus is that the players are
having fun” says Coach Palin. “Of course the players deserve an applause
on their commitment, however without the support of the parents our
team wouldn’t be what they are or where we are, a big thank you to the
parents” says team manager Liz McArthur.
The Grimsby Vipers have been together for the last 3 years. Throughout
that time some players have come and some have gone. The majority of
players have been together since and this year 5 new players have
joined. The team practices twice a week and their game night is Monday.
This year the Grimsby Vipers are in the 1st Division of the South Region
Soccer League. For more information visit the Grimsby Town Youth Soccer
Club website at www.grimsbysoccer.ca or www.gtysc.ca.

Congratulations to the 2013 Grimsby Galaxy U17 Tim Hortons
Coldstone SRSL Girls Soccer Team - Mississippi Invitational Tournament
Champions!!!
The Grimsby Galaxy Tim Hortons Coldstone U17 SRSL girl’s soccer team
traveled to Ottawa the weekend of July 19-21st to participate in the
Mississippi Invitational Soccer Tournament. We arrived on Friday to a
torrential thunder storm and the threat of a tournament cancellation.
Fortunately, Saturday morning provided sunnier skies for the weekend’s
action.
During our first match against Rockland, Grimsby managed a 2-1 win with
goals from Kristen Moore and Cassidy Murray. The second match against
Cornwall saw the girls win with a 3-0 score line - goals by Kristen
Moore, Cassidy Murray and Tristan Sutherland-Hogan. The final game on
Saturday against Waterloo ended in a 3-0 win with goals by Brooke Opdam,
Brooke Stubbert and Kayli Thorpe. The Galaxy finished Saturday with an
undefeated record thanks to the solid defending by Ashley Roberts, Kayli
Thorpe, Shannon Bezemer, Kayla Mitchell, Hannah Kurpe and goalie Morgan
Schilstra.
Final round robin play on Sunday morning saw the Galaxy playing as the
home team vs. Ottawa. Nil-nil at the final whistle, the game went to
shootouts with Grimsby coming out on top with Kayla Woolvett, Brooke
Opdam and Brittany Blair converting from the spot. Goalkeeper Morgan
Schilstra saved two of the opposing team’s attempts and saw a third go
wide of her goal.
Undefeated through round robin play and only surrendering a single goal
was partly due to the endless running of midfielders Arden Fairbrother,
Amanda McMurray, Olivia Fraser, Brittany Blair, Brooke Stubbert, Kayla
Woolvett and Tristan Sutherland-Hogan.
A tense final against Rockland went scoreless until the final ten
minutes when Cassidy Murray converted a through ball by Brooke Opdam to
give the Galaxy the tournament championship.
Congratulations to all the girls on their tremendous effort. Thanks to
the parents for their continued support and enthusiasm. Also thanks to
team manager Deb Woolvett and coaches Ed Opdam and Al Roberts for all
their hard work.
